Press Release: Statement from the International Seafarers Ministry of Miami on the Passing of a Crew Member Aboard Icon of the Seas

Miami, FL — The International Seafarers Ministry of Miami is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of a crew member aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas on Thursday, July 24, 2025. According to confirmed reports, the individual fell overboard near the Bahamas and was later recovered from the water but did not survive. Our hearts are broken by this loss of life in our global seafaring community.

On behalf of our team and volunteers, we extend our sincerest condolences to the crew member’s family, loved ones, and shipmates. We also lift up in prayer the entire crew of Icon of the Seas during this difficult and traumatic time.

As a ministry committed to the well-being and care of seafarers—including their spiritual, emotional, and psychosocial well-being—we recognize the immense challenges they face while serving far from home. Seafarers are the invisible backbone of global commerce and tourism, and their hard work and resilience deserve our highest respect and support.

We also acknowledge and commend Royal Caribbean’s swift response and care for those affected by this tragic event. The company has long demonstrated a commitment to the safety, dignity, and welfare of its crew, and we affirm their continued efforts.

We invite the community of Miami—especially local churches and concerned citizens—to support our mission to serve and care for seafarers who pass through our ports every day. Together, we can be a source of comfort, hope, and healing for those who dedicate their lives to working at sea.

Our ministry team stands ready to offer pastoral support, crisis care, and compassionate presence to crew members impacted by this event, both onboard and when the ship arrives in Miami.

Let us remember and honor those who serve the world by sea. May God’s comfort and peace surround all who grieve, and may we continue to walk alongside the seafarers of the world with love and purpose.
